Classroom Teaching Assistant

This position requires love, patience and respect for children. Ideal candidate will have experience encouraging children to be independent and model for them appropriate manners and behaviors. The assistant teacher will instruct children in activities designed to promote social, physical, and intellectual growth following the philosophies of Maria Montessori.  This position reports to the Lead Teacher (Guide) and Executive Director. 
Major areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:
  • Adhere to school and safety policies and procedures
  • Become knowledgeable with Montessori terminology and methods
  • Assist the Lead Teacher (Guide) with providing the children with a “prepared environment”
  • Help keep the classroom prepared for lessons that align with the California Curriculum Standards
  • Assist with individual and/or group activities/lessons to stimulate growth of the children in social, emotional and academic areas.
  • Support goals of the different work cycles
  • Guide students in choosing work that will aid in discovery and increase in skills and knowledge
  • Review student work and lead them into extensions of the cosmic education curriculum
  • Collaborate with Lead Teacher (Guide) in all school day activities
  • Encourage individual work time of children to promote independence as well as group work to promote socialization
  • Be present at parent/teacher conferences as required by Director
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children, parents and co-workers
  • Participate in all open houses and school programs as required by the Director
  • Oversee snack and lunch/recess while helping children to learn how maintain independence
  • Assist with arrival and/or dismissal of children at the beginning and/or end of school day
  • Allow children to be as independent as possible while providing the appropriate boundaries for civil behavior
  • Maintain a friendly, pleasant, and positive demeanor with children and parents, understanding and working in a Montessori manner
Requirements for Classroom Assistant Position:
  • Availability Mon-Thurs 8:00am - 12:15pm (12-13 school year commences July 25, 2012)
  • Ability to work with children 6-12 years of age
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Must have clear (or negative) tuberculosis (TB) test and pass criminal background check prior to first day of employment
  • Public Montessori experience & Spanish fluency a plus
  • Must pass CBEST (California Basic Educational Skills Test) or be willing to obtain (condition of employment)
