Worms Eat Our Garbage
A big thanks to Jeff Logan and Vanessa Guthrie for getting our class set up with a vermiculture box. They supplied the worms, shredded coconut fibers, and newspaper, while we supplied the food scraps. Jeff introduced to the students the process of worm composting and then they helped him construct the bin. We are pleased to have these beneficial animals working away in our classroom!
Point Reyes Bird Observatory
The students enjoyed taking a hands-on approach to bird identification at our recent visit to PRBO. Led by Missy Wipf, the class discussed the characteristics of birds that help with identification. They brainstormed a list that included markings/feathers, feet, beak shape, and size. They took a hand at sketching a stuffed bird and then worked with a field guide to identify their bird using it's common and scientific name. We look forward to the next time we work with PRBO.
Donations for Haiti
The school community has finished collecting medical items for Doctors Without Borders. Our third graders gathered the items from each class, sorted them into categories, and counted the items. The final count was 509 items, which included an abundance of Tylenol, hydrogen peroxide, pain relievers, cough medicine, antibiotic creams, and Band-Aids. Thank you, families!
Planting at Shollenberger
The students had a fabulous time planting native plants last week at Shollenberger. If you haven't already, I encourage you to visit the park and have your child show you the fruits of our labor. (The plants are located near the main entrance.)
Highlights of the day included finding an abundance of worms, learning about rhizomes and the names of five native plants, and hiking back home through the puddle-laden paths. Dr. Shribbs was fantastic with the students. We look forward to working with him again in the near future.
