Thank you to all our amazing volunteers!!
Current Volunteer Opportunities
We have some wonderful new volunteer opportunities available. We greatly appreciate all of the time and effort River parents devote to the school. Your help really makes a positive difference to our budget. Every dollar counts!
Please don't forget to log those volunteer hours. The log is next to the copy room next to the office. If you can't make it into the school to log your time, please feel free to contact Dana Wade at volunteer@rivermontessori.org. In the interest of saving paper, if you regularly volunteer a couple hours a week, write the total hours for the month on the line. We need to have documentation of volunteer hours to show the CDE during the charter renewal process that we can count on volunteer time to offset costs.
If you are new to River or would like to brush up on River volunteer expectations, please review Volunteer Basics below. Here is a list of opportunities we have available.
Lunch/Recess Duty and Pick-Up Duty (ongoing) We need additional lunch/recess duty (12-1pm) volunteers as well as some volunteers to help load students into their cars at dismissal from 3-3:15 M-TH or 1-1:15 Fridays.
Handy-Person
It would be a great help if someone could come in once a week to help with “odd jobs.” This might include anything from hanging things on walls, to moving furniture, to tacking down carpets, to getting balls off the roof. It doesn’t have to be a consistent day of the week and there might not always be a project each week. The timing is flexible.
Calling all Painters
We are looking for volunteers to do some interior painting. The project will start as soon as we have some paint and painting volunteers. Feel free to either pitch in to buy paint/painting supplies or pick up a brush and get a little messy. (Painting will take place on a weekend so that children will not be affected by the fumes.)
Summer Camp Resource Guide Project
River parent, Lisa Elliott, is looking for someone to help put together a resource list of summer camp options available in the area. The project requires researching summer camps and then creating a list of pertinent camp info that can go out to parents.
Contact Dana Wade at volunteer@rivermontessori.org if you'd like to volunteer for any of the aforementioned openings.
Everyone volunteering at the school during the school day needs a TB test. If you got it elsewhere within the last year you need to leave documentation at the front desk, before you volunteer.

Brief Montessori Guide
Together we operate by a commitment to the following practices without exception:
q We model social behavior for the children and are the epitome of calm, peace, grace, and consideration. Voices are calm and soft and word choice is positive, nurturing, and encouraging of efforts and development.
q Children are allowed to work uninterrupted. Individual process, cycles of activity, and thought process are respected. We are patient and wait for a child to discover his or her own epiphanies and understanding.
q Our classrooms are multi-age and children are supported in participating on varying levels during any activity. Children have the right to participate or not participate.
q We take a developmental approach in all situations. When preparing lessons or activities or working out a social disagreement, we observe and then ask the question, “What does the child need developmentally in this situation?”
We focus on respect for the child and the student community. This respect manifests itself in:
q A gentle manner
q Quiet to moderate voice
q Mild and rich language- kind supportive, nurturing, positive, scientific language
q Questions or reflective inquiry rather than commands or directives
q Consensus with all students involved and included
If you have any questions regarding how to work within a Montessori classroom, please call 707-778-6414 and set up an appointment with our Director, Ann Mooney.
